Transport

Transport is both a key issue and a major challenge for Sutherland. Effective transport links are critical to Sutherland’s future development. Sutherland is large in area, but limited in population terms. Its transport options are therefore limited.

To realise, fully, the opportunities which will allow Sutherland to grow and prosper there is a need to promote and deliver a range of transport solutions and improvements. Such solutions and changes will support the rural economy; attract visitors; improve access to goods and services; and ultimately contribute to the promotion of more sustainable rural communities. The recognition of the importance of transport prompted the Sutherland Partnership, as the lead Community Planning Partnership in the County, to establish the Sutherland Partnership Transport Group (SPTG), which meets periodically under the chairmanship of Councillor Ian Ross.

The SPTG’s first major output was the Transport Vision for Sutherland document, produced in 2007. Click here to read it.  The Sutherland Partnership acknowledges the generous support of Highland Council and Highlands and Islands Enterprise in the publication of this document.
